March 2, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo (GMA), aboard one of the three presidential Bell Helicopters landed on the soccer field in front of the Academy building. In the absence of the Academy principal, Mr. Nimrod Salazar Academy discipline officer met the president upon coming down from the chopper. She expressed her gratefulness for allowing her team to use the school grounds. High school students were the first to greet the president before she could go around the campus. She would be the guest speaker at the nearby Philippine National Police Academy (PNPA) graduation exercises. Before proceeding to PNPA in Camp Castaneda, GMA along with her staff and the Presidential Security Group ( PSG) met shortly in the Livelihood Center, where she was welcomed by the administrative staff headed by Prof. Emeflor Monebit, VPAA and OIC.

Along with the president were, TV personality “Manay” Gina De Venecia, and wife of House Speaker Jose De Venecia, and Ms. Lupita Aquino-Kashiwahara, sister of the late Senator Ninoy Aquino. Right after the meeting college students and faculty had the chance to talk with the president, shake hands with her, ask for autographs and have pictorials. Before leaving the campus she left scholarship forms for poor but deserving students. Upon returning from Camp Castaneda Mrs. Lagajino, Academy asst. principal met GMA as she stepped down from one of the cars in the convoy as the rest of the faculty and other students bade her good bye. Before boarding the helicopter she disclosed that she gave a small donation to the school.

GMA is not the first president to land her helicopters on the soccer field. It would be recalled that in 1998 President Joseph Estrada also chose AUP as his landing area before proceeding to Camp Castaneda also as guest speaker for the PNPA graduation rights. Since the Academy area has become a favorite landing sight of the PSG, The AUP administration is considering the idea of constructing an appropriate conference room with presentable restrooms near the area for dignitaries like the president of the country.
