What did Jesus say of His attitude toward the law?
Answer
"Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil." Matt.
5: 17.
NOTE-The word "fulfil" as here used is taken by many to mean that Christ brought the law to an
end. But the meaning of the word varies according to its usage, as is evident from the definition in the
Concise Oxford Dictionary: "Fulfil. Bring to consummation, carry out, (prophecy, promise) satisfy (desire,
prayer) perform, execute, do, (command, law) ; answer (purpose) comply with (conditions) bring to an end,
finish, complete, (period, work)."
In the sermon on the mount, so far from abolishing the law, Christ set forth its eternal,
unchangeable character, and the deep spirituality of its requirements, entering as they do into the thoughts
and intents of the heart.
